Mika Martini / Frank Benkho

"Mika Martini" is the principal solo project of Hugo Espinosa Chellew (*Chile, 1967), self-taught electronic musician and director of the independent record label Pueblo Nuevo Netlabel. With studies in architecture and a degree in design from Universidad Católica de Chile, Espinosa has developed his artistic skills in areas ranging from the direction of video clips, 3-D animation, traditional graphic design, multimedia and, starting in 2001, Web design – the occupation that he currently performs "officially".

Under the alias of Mika Martini, Espinosa initiated a musical solo career in early 2004 with the firm objective of rescuing and mixing sounds coming from the Chilean ethnic background and abstract elements, linked to the techniques of "microsampling" and the "minimal" current, developing a parallel work more linked to experimental music and electronic improvisation.

At the end of 2004, Mika Martini formed part of the "Taller Electro (electronic workshop)", an entity created by the Electroacoustic Community of Chile (CECh) as a space for musical creation, dissemination, and training of new creators of electroacoustic and acousmatic music. From that milestone, Martini has continued to work with the CECh, of which he is a member, in the organization of events, concerts and promotion of the International Festival of Electronic Music Ai-Máako. Additionally, his relationship with electroacoustic music materialized through studies of composition and spatialization with the masters Rodrigo Sigal (Mexico) and Federico Schumacher (Chile) respectively.

Musical Projects and Releases:
As Mika Martini he has released six discs: “Mestizo” (Pueblo Nuevo, Chile, 2006);“Revolver Cenizas”, together with Oscar Chaves (Ruidemos Netlabel, España, 2008);“Estrellas Transcompactas”, together with Edén Carrasco (Exp_Net, España, 2008),“Mestizo Retocado” (Pueblo Nuevo, Chile, 2009), “Los Hanoish y otras subculturas extintas” (Pueblo Nuevo, Chile, 2012) y “Muelle Prat” (Epasonidos, Chile, 2015); In 2009, he collaborated as an invited musician, co-author of 3 tracks and artistic producer on the disc “Kuluana”, of the magallánicos Lluvia Acida. Moreover, he has participated in a large quantity of compilations and remixes (see complete discography here).

As a frequent collaborator, in 2005, Mika Martini along with Daniel Jeffs, created the project “Chiste”, dedicated to experimental music and live electronic improvisation live, a group that has released to date the discs “Civic Education, Part 1” (Independiente, Chile, 2005 – re-released by Revolución!!! Netlabel, Perú, 2008); “Música para la Galería” (Dinet, México, 2008); “Conflicto de interés” (Amigos de la Contaminación Sonora, Chile, 2010); and “Infiltrados en la Montaña” (Pueblo Nuevo, Chile, 2010); and they have contributed tracks for the compilations: “Pyo Positions” (Pyo collaborative projects, Francia, 2005),“Transmissão/Transmission” (Antena, Brasil, 2005), “Compatible 1.0” released by TallerElectro (TallerElectro, Chile, 2005), “Pueblo Nuevo Primer Aniversario”(Pueblo Nuevo, Chile, 2006) y “Sudamérica Electrónica Vol. 2” (Sudamérica Electrónica, Argentina, 2008).

In 2011, under the new alias "Frank Benkho", Espinosa continued exploring and advancing the improvisation with machines in real-time and with the use of similar instruments, marked by the manipulation of sound objects with different characteristics: old generators of frequencies to tubes (oscillators), a toy keyboard, apparatuses sensitive to light, digital or analog effects and the voice, they are recorded and reiterated with loop machines creating melodies and atmospheres approaching "Gospel" and "noise", in a sort of pagan liturgy, with varying intensities, that can range from whispered melodies to the extreme of pure noise.

To date he has released his debut: “The Revelation according to Frank Benkho” (Clang, Vinilo 12″, Dinamarca, 2014); and he has participated in various compilations: “Wave Compilation” (Clang, Dinamarca, 2014); “Trogotronic Compilation – II” (Pro-noise, USA, 2013); “Variations Edit – Fuga compilado 15 años vol. 3” (Fuga Records, Argentina, 2012); “Menesunda” (Sincro Netlabel, Argentina, 2012); and “Versos o Cantos de Noche Buena” (MichitaRex, Chile, 2011).

Finally, in 2011, along with Pablo Flores and Fernando Mora, he created the project "C/VVV", based mainly on musical improvisation with analog electronic instruments. Their debut occured at the inaugural concert for the "Noche Blanca (White Night)" at the "International Festival of Electroacoustic Music Ai-Máako" that same year. Subsequently, in 2013 they participated in the "10th Biannual of Media Arts" with an Audiovisual Concert; in 2014 they participated in the "1st Festival of independent labels Radio Inventada" organized by the Centro Cultural de España de Santiago; In addition, they have appeared in Satta TV, MicroFestLabel of Valparaíso and the record store Needle. In 2015 they released their debut “Todo no es todo” through the netlabel Jacobino Discos. Furthermore, they have participated in the compilation discs Jacobino Discos vol.3” (Jacobino Discos, Chile, 2015) y “Pacifico” (001 Records, Chile, 2015).

 
Distinguished Performances:
As Mika Martini he has presented his music throughout Chile (from Antofagasta to Puerto Williams) and abroad. In 2007 he performed en México, in a three week tour backed by the Dirección de Asuntos Culturales del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores of the government of Chile (DIRAC), visiting the Mexican cities Morelia, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Mexicali. In 2009 he participated as the only Chilean representative at the “Segundo Festival Dialectos Digitales (Second Festival of Digital Dialects)” in La Paz, Bolivia. In October of this same year he performed the audiovisual spectacle “Los Hanoish y otras subculturas extintas”, in the concert “Noche Blanca”, realized in the  IX Festival of Electroacoustic Music Ai-Maako in Santiago. In 2013 he participated as an invitee as the at the awards ceremony of the “Qwartz Awards” for electronic music in París, Francia. Moreover, he has performed in different venues, festivals, and cultural centers in Perú, Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Spain. What is more, the audiovisual spectacle of Frank Benkho has been presented in the Festival Re-new (2011, Copenhagen, Denmark), Galería NIU (2011, Barcelona, Spain), Centro Cultural La Cúpula (2011, Córdoba, Argentina), 10° Bienal de Video y Artes Mediales (2012, Santiago, Chile), Festival Cruces Sonoros (2012, Santiago, Chile), Encuentro Fricciones (2013, Santiago, Chile), Festival MicroFestLabel (2014, Valparaíso, Chile), among others.

2015
October: Participates with its project "Frank Benkho" in the recital “Exploradores del Sonido v.3“, performed at the University of Michigan, USA; an instance where he also gave a talk about Pueblo Nuevo, netlabels and related topics.
October: Release of the disc: “Muelle Prat” (Epasonidos, Chile, 2015).
October: Produces and participates in the commemorative compilation disc “Di algo… Pueblo Nuevo 10° Aniversario” (Pueblo Nuevo, Chile, 2015).
July: General organization and participates as a musician in the “Concierto Audiovisual 10° Aniversario Pueblo Nuevo Netlabel”, event held at the Cultural Center of Spain in Santiago, with the participation of Chilean and Argentinean artists. Santiago, Chile.

2006
Diciembre: Participación en Jornadas “(un)commonsounds”, realizadas en el Centro Cultural de España, Santiago, Chile. Las jornadas culminaron con una presentación de bandas y proyectos electrónicos, recital organizado por Pueblo Nuevo, presentándose: Mika Martini, GFR, Dadalú y Diego Morales.

Diciembre: Ganador del concurso anual de la Dirección de Asuntos Culturales del Ministerio de relaciones Exteriores del Gobierno de Chile, con el proyecto “Pueblo Nuevo en México 2007”.

Diciembre: Presentaciones en Buenos Aires, Argentina (Bedbaires, Youkali Hotel).

Noviembre: Presentación en Festival “Compatible 2.1/TransAcústico”, junto al destacado saxofonista Edén Carrasco, Sala SCD Bellavista, Santiago.

Septiembre: Presentación de Mika Martini en Ciclo “Pueblo Nuevo en Biblioteca Viva”, Mall Plaza Vespucio, Santiago.

Julio: Fundación del sello virtual independiente “Pueblo Nuevo Netlabel”, junto a Daniel Jeffs.

Abril: Edita el disco “Civic Education, Part 1”, álbum debut del dúo “Chiste” (Mika Martini y Daniel Jeffs).

2004
Diciembre: Participación de Mika Martini como músico invitado en la muestra “Intervención fotográfica, Parque Cultural Ex-cárcel de Valparaíso”, presentada por FotoAmérica 2004 y producida por el colectivo Cámara Lúcida.

Junio: Participación de Mika Martini como co-ejecutor relevante en el proyecto de Cortometraje documental “Un Puente Demasiado Cerca”, ganador del Fondart 2004, produciendo la música y el diseño gráfico de la película.

Abril: Participación con el track “Retrato a dos lenguas” de Mika Martini en disco “Oscilación, Música y Poesía”, proyecto que amalgamó música electrónica y poetas jóvenes chilenos. Producido por Manuel Rojas y editado por AlMargen Editores.

2003
Participación con el track “Cerro Azul” de Usted No! en el disco compilado “Techfest”, sobre música electrónica chilena (Techfest Records).

2002
Presentación internacional del disco “Conexión_Domeyko” (Independiente), a propósito de la Conmemoración del Bicentenario del natalicio de Ignacio Domeyko, con una gira de dos semanas por Polonia (Varsovia, Cracovia), patrocinada por la Dirección de Asuntos Culturales del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores DIRAC.

Edición del disco “Conexión_Domeyko”, álbum debut del grupo “Usted No!” como autor e intérprete de varios tracks.

1994-1997
Fundador de productora audiovisual “Cubonegro”, ejerciendo el cargo de Director Creativo y Director de Video-clips para grupos chilenos como: Sexual Democracia, Nicole, Los Peores de Chile, Illapu, Congreso, Bambú, entre otros.
